Font Installation

I'm just starting out. Which fonts would you recommend?

If you're lettering your own comic book, start with one of our full-featured Balloon Lettering fonts, either with upper and lowercase, or all-uppercase with alternate characters, depending on your preference. You will also need a few Sound Effect fonts for your ZAPs POWs and THRAKABOOOMs, and a Display font or two for titles, credits and possibly a logo. And if you really want to spice up your lettering, add some Custom Voice fonts for specific character voices and/or fancy caption styles. If you're looking for just the bare minimum to get started, try our $29 ZAP Pack — it has a single font with Regular and BoldItalic alphabets, pre-made sound effects from A-Z, and dozens of pre-made balloons. What kind of computers and programs do your fonts work with?

Properly installed, our fonts will show up in the font menu of each application on your on Macintosh and Windows computer. Each of our font packages includes Opentype and Truetype formats. We use and recommend Opentype format for the best quality screen and print output. Many of our Opentype fonts also have extra auto-ligatures for a more natural, random appearance. I've downloaded the file you sent, but can't extract the fonts.

Our font files are compressed in ZIP archives. In Mac OSX, double-click the file and it will automatically expand, creating a new folder in the same location as the .zip. In Windows, use Winzip (or similar) to extract the font files.

How do I install the fonts?

Our downloads include basic guidelines for installing your fonts. If you have a font management utility installed, such as Suitcase or SuperATM, follow the instructions that came with that program. Check the folder where you've installed the fonts and make sure you've installed only the Opentype (.otf) OR Truetype (.ttf) files. If both are in there, remove one or the other and relaunch any open applications. Mac fonts are usually installed in Your Computer > Library > Fonts Windows fonts are usually in Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Fonts Microsoft Office applications sometimes have difficulty recognizing Opentype fonts. If you primarily use Office, remove the Opentype (.otf) and install the Truetype (.ttf) files instead.
